Big Blue Summer
Summer 2020 was an insane summer! We all came together in the face of adversity and created so many awesome memories with our fellow campers and counselors!
Many of Big Blue Summer’s academic courses were run remotely by our experienced and enthusiastic Pingry faculty and adjunct teachers, who didn’t miss a beat pivoting to a more technologically-dependent delivery of summer courses!
Additionally, in lieu of an in-person BBS Day Camp, we worked really hard to develop an innovative BBS Camp-in-a-Box experience, delivered right to our campers’ doorsteps! Each weekly BBS Camp in a Box carried a unique theme, came packed with fun and educational activities, and was highly interactive, including daily online meet-ups with counselors and peers, group games, special guest events, and more! Transforming our popular Day Camp into an online camp was a success and a accomplishment for our team.
We’re also extremely proud to partner with organizations who proactively put together a variety of online content and at-home kits to keep kids engaged and smiling.
See below for some of the programs that were new for summer 2020:
BBS Camp-in-a-Box is our innovative new at-home experience that consists of games, activities, and crafts that will help campers develop their summer Honor C.O.D.E. competencies: Curiosity, Openness, Dedication, and Enthusiasm! We’re also proud of the educational component that comes in the form of the very same teachers who lead rotations in our normal BBS Day Camp, such as Ms. Eileen, “Nature” Rachel, and “Musical” Ms. Dana. Campers will have three online meetings or events each day of the week, with a special guest visitor every Wednesday. Campers are encouraged to follow along and attend all meetings, but we understand how difficult it is to hold a schedule, so we include instructions to all activities in case families want to go at their own pace. There are six weeks of BBS Camp-in-a-Box and each week carries a different theme. You can sign up for as many as you’d like! Click here to browse all of our exciting BBS Camp-in-a-Box themes!
Hummingbird Robotics Kit
In a partnership with BirdBrain Technologies, we’re excited to offer Hummingbird Robotics Camp, which comes with all the components necessary for beginners and advanced robotics enthusiasts to solve engineering problems and create robots out of household items! Campers will learn the basics of programming and how the Hummingbird works. Together we will explore its various functionality and build simple robots and then create unique robots only bounded by their imagination.
Reading Booster (rising grades 2-3)
This new addition to our virtual academic catalog will have students exploring fiction and nonfiction texts to strengthen their reading skills, fluency, and comprehension.
BBS STEAM Camp (rising grades 1-3)
Using a picture book as a mentor text, our young engineers will follow the design thinking process to find solutions. Students will share their daily progress with their instructor and peers, and will be encouraged to think creatively!
