Elementary Summer Courses at the Short Hills Campus - Rising K - 5th

Pingry is proud to once again offer a one-week program for rising second, third, fourth and fifth grade students. Taking place at the newly renovated Short Hills campus this program runs alongside our traditional program and provides an introduction to the The Pingry School experience.

Students will take courses specifically developed for the one-week model, engaging in academic enrichment activities based on the various subject matter including, Math, Language Arts, Reading, Science and Technology. Each day is built with hands-on experiences that sharpen students’ academic skills and promote a love of learning.

The one-week courses are an excellent option for current Pingry students, newly accepted students and students from the surrounding communities.

Students will be leveled by grades and rotate through the different subjects throughout the 3 hours. Movement breaks and snack will be provided.

+ Reading like writers, writing like readers - Rising 1st-4th

Based upon the Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop format, four weeks will be offered where young readers and writers will be able to develop their growing skills for reading and writing, learning about its power and purpose. Each week students will be exposed to a new genre. The reading units will coincide with each writing unit, allowing the student a unique experience to develop informed theories about the characters they meet in their books, while developing their stamina, fluency, and comprehension. Each day, students will participate in reading and writing mini-lessons, have time to read and write independently, engage in one-on-one conferences with teachers to receive individualized instruction, and learn to deepen their reading comprehension and lift the level of their writing through the use of a variety of literacy skills, strategies, tools, and mentors.

Students will be leveled by grades and rotate through the different subjects throughout the 3 hours. Movement breaks and snack will be provided.

Pingry is excited to open the newly renovated Kindergarten suite to current Pingry students, newly admitted students and students from surrounding schools to our amazing Stepping Stones program.

Our own Pingry teachers will use a variety of instructional methods to build skills and encourage critical thinking. This special program introduces incoming students to kindergarten teachers and specialists at Pingry. We integrate music, dramatic play, math, art, and language arts to help prepare children to enter the full day school setting. Grade 1 students are also welcome and will engage in more challenging versions of the activities.

Students will be grouped by grades and rotate to the different subjects throughout the 3 hours. Movement breaks and snack will be provided.

New for Summer 2017! This hands-on workshop will engage students in Mathematical and Design Thinking. Taking place in the Lower School’s Art Room and Maker Space, participants will be introduced to a variety of real world problem solving activities using math concepts and visual literacy skills as a foundation to foster innovative thinking.

This one-week course is designed for current Pingry students, newly accepted students and students from the surrounding communities. You may take one or both weeks.

Students will be leveled by grades and rotate through the different subjects throughout the 3 hours. Movement breaks and snack will be provided.

+ PINGRY ONLINE COURSES

Don’t let travel plans or other commitments prevent your child from participating in our summer enrichment opportunities. Pingry Online in its inaugural summer season offers fun and flexible programs offered through our secure web-based system and taught by Pingry faculty. Participants can access the course content anytime from anywhere and interact with faculty via web conferencing software.

Intro to Web Design

This two week course introduces participants to Wordpress, a popular website creation platform. Wordpress allows users to create sophisticated web pages that include blogging functionality, media integration and user input. Wordpress also supports multiple ways to extend its functionality to customize your website. At the end of the course, participants will have created their own Wordpress site. No coding knowledge is needed.

Office Hours/Online Meetings:
Office hours are available each weekday via web conferencing software (except holidays) and by appointment. Faculty will provide frequent feedback to participants the progress of the course project/assignments.
