Intro to the Essay
The analytical essay is at the heart of a student’s English experience from middle school forward. The Middle School Writing Workshop will foster the ability to craft effective essays from the ground up – beginning with the close reading of a piece of literature and culminating in a well-crafted expository argument. Using a workshop approach to the writing process, students will participate in a series of mini-lessons, each with the goal of refining their ability to read deeply and carefully, think critically, and write clearly and effectively. Students will receive and reflect on feedback throughout the course so that they may continually hone their skills; they will work both in group settings and individually to constantly increase their fluency and comfort with the writing process. Students will leave the course with a portfolio of their own polished pieces — and a wealth of materials to guide their future writing.
