Reading like Writers, Writing like Readers
Based upon the Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop format, four weeks will be offered where young readers and writers will be able to develop their growing skills for reading and writing, learning about its power and purpose. Each week students will be exposed to a new genre. The reading units will coincide with each writing unit, allowing the student a unique experience to develop informed theories about the characters they meet in their books, while developing their stamina, fluency, and comprehension. Each day, students will participate in reading and writing mini-lessons, have time to read and write independently, engage in one-on-one conferences with teachers to receive individualized instruction, and learn to deepen their reading comprehension and lift the level of their writing through the use of a variety of literacy skills, strategies, tools, and mentors.
Students will be leveled by grades and rotate through the different subjects throughout the 3 hours. Movement breaks and snack will be provided.
